什麼是核心詞彙？
統計顯示，我們講的話有80%，由200~300個詞彙組成（Balandin & Iacono, 1999; Chen, et al. 2013; Liu & Sloane 2006），我們稱這些詞彙為核心詞彙。核心詞彙為一小組有限的詞彙，不受時間、地點、溝通對象的限制，可以表達各種溝通目的 （Banajee et al. 2015; Marvin et al., 2009）。核心詞彙例如：「我」、「不」、「好」、「那個」、「吃」，詞性多為代名詞、指稱詞、動詞、形容詞。
其餘20%，是其他所有詞彙（無上限），稱為邊緣詞彙。邊緣詞彙例如：「長頸鹿」、「大象」，詞性多為名詞，其功能特定且有限，而且還需要其他語言來澄清意思，例如小孩說：「大象！」指的可能是「你看！有大象！」或是「我要大象娃娃！」。
為什麼AAC要用核心詞彙？
對孩子來說，AAC裡的詞彙就是他能表達的詞彙，我們必須慎選要放進AAC溝通板的詞彙。
使用核心詞彙，能夠…
1. 達成多種溝通目的
2. 隨時隨地都能溝通
使用核心詞彙，讓AAC使用者在任何地點（例如：家裡、學校、大賣場），在任何時間（例如：吃飯、洗澡、上課），跟任何人（例如：家人、老師、同學、陌生人）都能溝通！
3. 用自己的方式表達
同樣一件事，每個人表達的方式都不同，例如: 對於不喜歡吃的東西，有人會說: 謝謝我不喜歡! 有人會說: 我討厭吃這個!。使用核心詞彙，讓AAC使用者有表達的自由，用自己的方式表達。
4. 可以組成句子
小孩的語言發展，是從單詞期（例如: 要）、詞彙組合期（例如: 要玩），發展到句子期（例如: 我要玩）。使用核心詞彙，小孩能夠從單詞期學會溝通，並學習組合詞彙，來表達更多的想法。
